The Little Flower Neighborhood Association wants to promote and encourage proper tree care practices to maintain the beauty and value of homes in the neighborhood. When working with landscape or tree professionals this summer, please consider the information below on the negative effects of Tree Topping.

Tree Topping Hurts Trees
The practice of topping is so widespread that many people believe it is the proper way to prune trees. Topping can cause a variety of problems in trees, and ultimately cause problems for homeowners.

Topping Versus Pruning
Topping is the excessive and arbitrary removal of all parts of the tree above and beyond a certain height without regard for the structure or growth pattern of the tree. Pruning is the selective removal of certain limbs based on the structure and growth pattern of the tree.

Tree Topping Myths:
The tree is too tall – This indicates poor species selection, improper tree placement, or fear that the tree might be dangerous in storms.
Topping reduces the risk of storm damage – The reduction in height reduces risk temporarily, but as the tree re-grows it is structurally weaker and the risk becomes greater.
It has to be topped because of power lines – Tree and power line conflicts may be resolved by proper species selection, better placement or different pruning technique. Remember: power line clearance benefits the lines, not the trees.

Problems Caused by Topping:
The balance between the roots and crown is destroyed. Sunscald can occur. Bark tissues suddenly exposed to full sun may be burned and develop disease cankers. Large stubs cannot wall off the cutting wound. As tissues die, wounds do not seal, and decay may enter and spread to the trunk.
New growth is weak. New sprouts are attached to the surface of stubs rather than being anchored from within former limbs.
Topping can create a hazard. Storms do more damage because the new growth is weakly attached.
Topping disfigures trees. Topping alters trees’ natural beauty and form.
Topping is only temporary. Trees will grow to their natural height rapidly.

Alternatives to Topping:
Select the right tree and plant it in the right place.
Remove the tree and replace it.
Prune the tree properly. Proper pruning removes limbs where they are attached to a larger branch or the trunk. Selective removal of limbs reduces the wind resistance of the tree.

Summary: The practice of topping is not recommended by the Little Flower Neighborhood Association. It can lead to decay, storm damage and disfigured trees. Proper pruning that thins the crown with cuts made at branch collars is the best practice for the long-term health of trees.

Hiring a Tree Care Company: LFNA encourages hiring companies who have International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified professionals on staff. A certified arborist is a tree care professional with knowledge and skills in proper tree care techniques. Please contact the ISA for a list of certified arborist in you area.

LFNA is currently searching for new funding for our newsletter, as well as other projects. We hope to publish a newsletter in the coming month but still need funding, and we will certainly need additional funding afterwards. Do you know someone who might be interested in helping?

Neighborhood membership helps us all accomplish our goals and fulfill various civic duties that we carry out in the neighborhood’s name. Your donation of time and financial support will help us maintain a clean, safe neighborhood!

Here are 12 Things YOU can do to Improve Your Neighborhood Right Now!

1. Pick up the litter near your home, even if you didn’t put it there. Get others working toward a common goal. Everyone feels good because they can see the results of their efforts. Also, when it is NOT trash day, keep your trash can near the rear of your property to help the streetscape look un-cluttered.

2. Turn your porch light on. Crime tends to decline in neighborhoods that are well lit.

3. Walk around the block. Neighbors benefit over time when more responsible citizens walk more at night around their block.

4. Drive slowly on neighborhood streets. Take the lead in slowing down traffic in your neighborhood.

5. Report nuisances and other non-criminal problems promptly.

6. Make a list of the names and phone numbers of every neighbor on your block. Unless you know neighbors’ names and numbers, you can’t call them about concerns or problems.

7. Meet the youth who live on your block and greet them by name.

8. Make a list of landlords in your area. As property owners, landlords are responsible to the neighborhood and most are rightly concerned about the health of the community.

9. Take away the opportunity for crime. Lock your car and never leave valuables in it. Trim bushes or trees that offer hiding places. Make your front porch visible.

10. Report crime promptly. Whether the issue is graffiti, petty vandalism, or something much more serious, police cannot act without first hearing about the problem.

11. Stay where you are. Stable neighborhoods are built on the commitment of long-term residents.

12. Help your neighborhood association or similar groups. Make sure someone in your household attends neighborhood meetings. You’ll be kept better informed and have the chance to guide and participate in the future of your neighborhood.
