We are pleased to announce that Mayor Greg Ballard will be the feature of our next neighborhood meeting! Mayor Ballard wants to speak to us about the importance of neighborhoods, among other things. More details are forthcoming, but make sure you put this date on your calendar so that you don’t miss your opportunity to speak with the mayor!

LFNA & Emerson Heights Tree Planting

In the next month, Little Flower Neighborhood, Emerson Heights, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful will team up to plant 40 trees in our neighborhoods. The new trees in Little Flower will be planted from 10th street up Bosart, Drexel, Wallace, Dequincy, Riley, Bancroft, and Emerson. We always need volunteers for these plantings and to maintain the trees. If you would like to help with the plantings or maintenance, please get in touch!

LFNA Memberships are way down in the last year. Our newsletter lost funding over a year ago and ever since memberships have been dwindling out. Are you a current member? Have you let your membership lapse?

LFNA is currently searching for new funding for our newsletter, as well as other projects. We hope to publish a newsletter in the coming month but still need funding, and we will certainly need additional funding afterwards. Do you know someone who might be interested in helping?

Neighborhood membership helps us all accomplish our goals and fulfill various civic duties that we carry out in the neighborhood’s name. Your donation of time and financial support will help us maintain a clean, safe neighborhood!

Trash Pickup Changes

Indianapolis is improving trash collection service for 120,000 households in Marion County. To find out more information about these changes, or to ask questions of DPW visit their webpage: http://www.indy.gov/eGov/City/DPW/Residential/Trash/SolidWasteImprovement/Pages/home.aspx

The only change that we noticed to Little Flower’s pickup is that “Heavy Trash Day” has moved to the fourth Monday of the month. Residents can enter their address to find out all the info they need about their trash pickup.

Feast of Lanterns Volunteers Needed!

Feast of Lanterns is one of the best events on the near eastside – the magic of paper lanterns strung throughout the park, the music, the great food, the unique craft, jewelry and artwork, information booths, fun and educational activities for families and children. Below is a message from Denise Walker, the Volunteer Coordinator of the Feast:

Every year we need a team of great volunteers like you to help out with the fun and fantastic FEAST! We need volunteers all 3 days! And we need a lot of you! Ideally, we need 10-20 people each day. Even if you can only help for a few hours, we can use you!! From hanging lanterns, to manning the booth, to security, to helping with the music, to walking around with donation buckets, we need you!!

We’ll have our first planning meeting in July. Thanks in advance for your willingness to make the 2010 Feast of Lanterns on the 40th anniversary of NESCO, a HUGE SUCCESS!!

Also, we will be needing event staff t-shirts. Anyone know of a t-shirt company willing to donate shirts in exchange for a little advertizing?

Historic Benton House Events

The Benton House is a historic landmark in Irvington, just over a mile from Little Flower. They are collecting books for the Benton House Book Sale which takes place August 27-28th. They are also currently accepting registrations for “The Benton House Classy Classic Car Show” which takes place during Irvington’s Benton House Tour of Homes on September 19th. Breaking Silence: Speak Up for Yourself and Your Neighborhood.

There are many ways to effectively change your neighborhood, positively. Break the silence!

1.) Join an internet web forum or chatroom to gain ideas or to vent
2.) Create a blog on the Internet
3.) Report issues/concerns to the Mayor’s Action Center (MAC)
4.) Attend community/neighborhood events
5.) Attend neighborhood meetings
6.) Call 911 when there is an emergency in your home or on your block
7.) Write to your Neighborhood Association
8.) Get out and talk with your neighbors
9.) Report suspicious activity to the Police

Here are 12 Things YOU can do to Improve Your Neighborhood Right Now!

1. Pick up the litter near your home, even if you didn’t put it there. Get others working toward a common goal. Everyone feels good because they can see the results of their efforts. Also, when it is NOT trash day, keep your trash can near the rear of your property to help the streetscape look un-cluttered.

2. Turn your porch light on. Crime tends to decline in neighborhoods that are well lit.

3. Walk around the block. Neighbors benefit over time when more responsible citizens walk more at night around their block.

4. Drive slowly on neighborhood streets. Take the lead in slowing down traffic in your neighborhood.

5. Report nuisances and other non-criminal problems promptly.

6. Make a list of the names and phone numbers of every neighbor on your block. Unless you know neighbors’ names and numbers, you can’t call them about concerns or problems.

7. Meet the youth who live on your block and greet them by name.

8. Make a list of landlords in your area. As property owners, landlords are responsible to the neighborhood and most are rightly concerned about the health of the community.

9. Take away the opportunity for crime. Lock your car and never leave valuables in it. Trim bushes or trees that offer hiding places. Make your front porch visible.

10. Report crime promptly. Whether the issue is graffiti, petty vandalism, or something much more serious, police cannot act without first hearing about the problem.

11. Stay where you are. Stable neighborhoods are built on the commitment of long-term residents.

12. Help your neighborhood association or similar groups. Make sure someone in your household attends neighborhood meetings. You’ll be kept better informed and have the chance to guide and participate in the future of your neighborhood.
